News from the Front #4 – 1000pts Dindrenzi versus Sorylian

As I mentioned in my Salute 2017 post, I had a 1000pt FSA game with a friend of mine. I was looking forward to it as it was a chance for me to get hammered by something other than Ray’s Terrans! Edd, my opponent, and his Sorylians are generally a little more ponderous than Ray and his Terrans. The Sorylian tactic tends to be to simply wade in, spam dice in all directions, and brutalise targets at close range. Edd also really really really likes the Sorylian gunships, and I can understand why given how damned nasty they are and just how difficult they are to kill!

Fleets, then, went as follows:
My Dindrenzi
Nausicaa Battleship with 2 Harpy escorts
2 lots of 3 Secutor Cruisers
2 Gladius Gunships
2 lots of 3 Thraex Frigates

Edd’s Sorylians
Falx Battleship
3 Falcata Cruisers with a Kopis Heavy Cruiser
3 Warwolf Gunships
3 Lucern Light Crusiers
3 Frigates (can’t remember the type)

Turn 1 started well enough for me, my battleship which normally does very little annihilated a cruiser with its opening salvo. A good start for what I knew what would be the hard flank to tame. Unfortunately I lost 2 cruisers to Edd’s cruisers and gunships. I had better success on the other flank destroying 2 light cruisers without much incident.

Start of Turn 1, although my battleship had already turned one of Edd’s cruisers into a debris field.

Given how useless my battleship tends to be, I thought I’d immortalise this particular success!

Turn 2 had mixed results for both Edd and I. On the right I managed to destroy one of those pesky gunships, but I did so at the cost of a cruiser squadron. Since I had no idea what the time was or how many turns we would end up playing, I felt I had set up what was left of the flank ready for some brutal nose-to-nose action. The left flank went well enough but not as well as I hoped. Edd had lost his light cruisers and most of his frigates, but one of my gunships was on its last legs.

Start of Turn 2. Relatively even at this point.

Turn 3 went as expected really as I lost my remaining cruisers and damaged gunship. It left the table looking oddly mirrored. I had a few bad rolls against his heavy cruiser that left it on the table and I hadn’t managed to even scratch his gunships. Edd’s battleship however, was looking very tasty in my frigates eyes. Unfortunately it was all for naught as we called it quits (it had been 3hrs of gaming) and the result was a minor victory for Edd.

Start of Turn 3. I was very hopeful for some good dice rolls at this point.

End of the game. Not the result I wanted, but I was content with my overall game play.

Overall, it was an enjoyable game and I think we both played pretty well. Sorylians are a tough fleet to crack, especially with those gunships spamming dice everywhere. Looking forward to a few rematches against him, but I have a feeling that I will be playing against Relthoza for a while as another friend is getting into the game!
